The insignia is comprehensive, representing one of the more significant collections in public domain. Until 2002, newly issued unit insignia was sent to the Museum by the U.S. Army Institute of Heraldry for archiving at the Museum.

The rank insignia collection is used by researchers and scholars because of the many one-of-a-kind examples it contains such as 1920’s experimental enlisted insignia and insignia designed for the CCC. Nineteenth century insignia examples are also significant. The Past Missions Gallery contains over 9,000 distinctive unit insignia, patches, chevrons on exhibit.

The collection of flags and guidons is among the more valuable in the Museum’s collection. It includes the first 50 star flag (designed and produced by the Quartermaster Corps) and examples of early 19th century flags. The collection also includes one of the more extensive examples of Presidential flags in public domain containing flags from the Theodore Roosevelt through the Eisenhower administrations.
